spicyfood

One of the strangest things about living in Korea as a foreigner is the fact that locals don‘t believe that we eat spicy food. Yes, it is true that some foreigners don‘t eat spicy food, but there are also many that love it and eat it every day. We are often surprised and confused when Koreans ask us multiple times a day if we like spicy foods, and this can create a stressful situation.

In fact, there are many countries with spicier food than Korea. When I was in India, Thailand, Mexico, and the USA I ate food that was much spicier. The food was so hot I cried while I ate it. The food in Korea is not like that. The food here is delightfully spicy instead of painfully spicy, and many foreigners think that this is fantastic. However, when Koreans make a big deal out of us eating spicy food every time we eat together, eventually it makes us want to eat alone to avoid the stress of explaining again, “Yes, I actually eat spicy food.”

If you are Korean, this might not sound important to you because you might only talk with an international resident every once in a while. However, imagine that you are a foreigner living here and nearly everyone you meet or work with is Korean. You work for a Korean business and eat together with all your co-workers, then at night you go out to eat with your friends at a Korean restaurant, and on weekends you socialize and meet new people. When you add it up, international residents are often asked this question from 5-20 times a day. Each time the question is asked, the person asking is surprised by the answer. They often follow up by asking the foreigner to list all of the spicy Korean food they eat. It is like being interrogated to prove your worth. After a year or two of this, the international resident will often feel tired and only want to eat alone or with other foreigners. We love eating together with Koreans, but this is stressful for many of us.

To make international residents feel more comfortable during a meal, instead of asking, “Do you eat spicy food?” ask us when we order “On a scale of 1 to 5, how spicy do you like your food? 1 is not spicy and 5 is very spicy.” If a foreigner says, “I like my food a level 5 spicy”, please don’t act shocked or make a big deal out of it. Instead, you can quietly respect and believe their choice. For business owners, I know the English phrase above is very hard to remember. To help you, I made a graphic that you can use in your restaurants. Put it on your menu or next to the cash register.

If you would like to try spicy foreign food, Pyeongtaek has some great places to try. Here are three that I love:

Ceviche 210, Sinjang-dong

A Peruvian restaurant is very famous among international residents. Their green sauce is served free with each meal and it is very spicy. Be careful. I eat it with the tortilla chips and pour it over my meal.

TangHwa Kungfu Malatang, Pyeongtaek-dong
Address:

This delicious Chinese soup is one of my favorites in town. They let you choose your spice level and I usually ask for three peppers. The flavors are very strong.

Wings-N-Things, Sinjang-dong
Address:

This US buffalo wings restaurant offers a wide variety of sauces. Some are spicy and some are not. We recommend trying the Spicy Mambo Wings. They are both sweet and hot, but not too hot.
